• Info: Beethoven wrote the two-movement Op 90 for his patron Morris von Lichnowsky, in 1814. Lichnowsky was at that time courting a much younger opera singer, and Beethoven suggested that there was a personal element to his composition -- the 1st Movement devoted more to the "head"; the 2nd more to the "heart". There is considerable debate as to whether this Sonata should be middle-period or late-period Beethoven - personally, I vote for the former because of the 1st Movement, with its terse, economical gestures so characteristic of some of his middle-period chamber works.
