Info: I record a lot of Joplin and figured y'all might want to hear some other good ragtime composers.
Artie Matthews was a contemporary of Joplin's. He is most known for his five "Pastime" rags but he was an arranger on others' rags and those rags also exhibit his style.
He wanted his rags played as written. They have the admonishment "Don't Fake!"
I consider Matthews in the vein of "fun" composers like Spike Jones, Raymond Scott (think Warner Bros soundtracks), Buster Poindexter.
Artie was born in 1888 but still has a living son, Art Matthews, a jazz pianist who teaches piano.
