• Info: Ernesto Nazareth is actually played by ragtime aficionados. He's kind of Scott Joplin's brother by another mother. He's contemporaneous with Joplin. He learned piano young. He performed young--he played in the lobbies of movie cinemas. His music represents a New World break from European traditions. He employed rhythms from local dance music, likely African-inspired, into his compositions. These rhythms are highly syncopated--speaking as a ragtimer, they're cakewalk-y and ragtime-y yet very Latin. Brejeiro is a dance called a Maxixe, though Nazareth called his style "Brazilian tango"
