• Info: Arthur Lourie was born in St Petersburg in 1892 of a cultured and musical jewish family. He emigrated to Paris in 1922, and then to New York after the war. His musical style became much more modernist by the 20's (I suppose it would have to - where else are you going to go after 5 'fragile preludes') and many people see him as anticipating many of Stravinsky's innovations along the way - although he never achieved anywhere near S's reputation. He has distinguished himself, in my mind (and this is the main reason I am introducing him here) as a confidant and lover of Anna Akhmatova. If you do not know that name you must drop what you are doing right now and look her up online. You can find biographies of her online and samples of her poetry. OK. Are you back? I have been busy with other things so thing of this recording as only kind of like what this piece sounds like. You can find it on youtube and many other Lourie pieces. Some of them are very interesting.
